Description
Ractopamine hydrochloride is a growth promoter and is pharmacologically classified as a phenethanolamine -adrenoceptor agonist. Livestock treated with Ractopamine infused nutritional supplements demonstrate higher feed efficiency but can suffer significant adverse health effects. Beta agonists such as Ractopamine speed the animal's heart rate mimicking stress hormones. Canadian MRLs for Ractopamine free base in tissue ranges from 0.01 to 0.2 ppm depending on the animal and tissue organ. FDA tolerances are established for residues of Ractopamine hydrochloride parent (marker residue) in edible swine tissues of 0.05 ppm in muscle and 0.15 ppm in liver (target tissue), are 0.09 ppm in cattle liver and 0.03 ppm in cattle muscle. The FDA tolerance for Ractopamine (the marker residue) in turkey liver is 0.45 ppm, and 0.1 ppm in turkey muscle. The Biorex assay detection time is just 20 minutes.
