Description
Aflatoxin B1 a metabolite of the mold Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. It is a potent toxin and hepatocarcinogen occasionally occurring as a contaminant in feeds and food products. Several types of aflatoxins are produced in nature. Aflatoxin B1 is the most common in food and amongst the most potent genotoxic and carcinogenic aflatoxins. Aflatoxin M1 is a major metabolite of aflatoxin B1 in humans and animals which may be present in milk from animals fed with aflatoxin B1 contaminated feed. The US and Canada regulate total aflatoxins e.g., Canada specifies a tolerance of 15 g/kg (ppb) total aflatoxins in nut and nut products, and FDA has established action levels of 20 ppb for total aflatoxins in food, nuts, corn products, animal feeds intended for dairy animals.
