Description
Sulfonamides are synthetic bacteriostatic antibiotics that competitively inhibit conversion of p -aminobenzoic acid to dihydropteroate which bacteria need for folate synthesis and DNA synthesis. Sulfonamides are a common allergen and can provoke a variety of reactions in hypersensitive humans. Sulfonamides are prohibited by FDA from extra-label use in honey production. No MRLs are established in Canada for Sulfonamide residues in honey. FDA has established a target testing limit of 10 ppb in honey which matches the EU's MRPL.
